Moving a 260 tonne HDS Reactor
The Problem
Moving a 260 tonne HDS Reactor from the Puma site in Milford Haven to Pembroke Dock, via a barge trip from Gelliswick Bay across to the dock.
Monster Moves Solution
The move involved a number of obstacles such as the railway bridge where there was only a clearance of millimeters and a tight bend on a camber where the same piece had rolled off when it was being brought to site originally in the 70s.
It then had to cross a temporary track way laid across the beach to get to the barge, which had beached when the tide went out, then the track way had to be removed before the tide came back in.
Temporary Track Transport Barge
A letter sent to residents along the route by Managing Director Tony Fenwick of WRD Decommissioning prior to the transportation said: “As part of the ongoing decommissioning of the Old Murco Refinery the transport of a single wide load will be undertaken by road on the date of Tuesday 5th September 2017 at approximately 9:30 hrs till 14:30 hrs hours. The transport will follow the public highway from the refinery towards Gelliswick Bay.
